8 Underrated Films Of Bollywood

Some movies certainly deserve more recognition and acclaim than what they have received. Even though they failed to gain mass popularity, they certainly make it to the list of some of the finest films made in Bollywood.   Highway Imtiaz Ali’s Highway (2014) starring Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda in the lead roles is indubitably one of the well made films of Indian cinema. The story revolves around Veera Tripathi played by Alia Bhatt, who gets abducted a day before her wedding but ironically she finds her abduction as a blessing in disguise as it gives her freedom from her family and helps her make peace with her traumatic childhood. The film although not very popular, is considered as one of Alia Bhatt’s finest of performances.   Lunchbox The Lunchbox (2013) directed by Ritesh Batra, features Irfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The story revolves around the life of Saajan Fernandes played by Irfan Khan who is a widower living a lonely life and is on the verge of his retirement. Due to an accidental mix up of tiff inboxes, he inadvertently gets delivered the tiffin box which Ila (played by Nimrat Kaur) had prepared for her husband. This mix up leads to an exchange of letters between Saajan and Ila developing their friendship even though they have never met or seen each other.  Even though the Lunchbox did not get as much popularity as the big budget films of Bollywood, it unarguably remains one of the finest films made in Indian cinema.   Masaan The 2015 drama film Masaan starring Vicky Kaushal, Richa Chaddha and Sanjay Mishra is one of the finest films made in Indian cinema and certainly deserves a lot more recognition than what it received. The film directed by Neeraj Gheiwan, stands out for its screenplay, direction and performances. The plot revolves around two separate stories of two separate individuals, Devi Pathak (played by Richa Chadha) and Deepak Kumar (played by Vicky Kaushal), whose parallel lives are shown to converge towards the end of the film.   Stanley ka dabba Written and directed by Amol Gupte, Stanley ka Dabba (2011) is one of the most commendable and underrated films of Bollywood. The story of the film revolves around the life of a nine year old school going student, Stanley Fernandes, played by Partho Gupte. Even though Stanley is very popular at the school amongst his friends and teachers, very little is known about his family and his life beyond the school. His friends along with the audience discover more about Stanley’s life as the story unfolds.    Khosla ka ghosla Khosla ka Ghosla (2006) with an ensemble star cast comprising Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Ranvir Shorey and Vinay Pathak is a comedy drama film directed by Dibaker Banerjee. The plot revolves around Kamal Khosla (played by Anupam Kher) and his family. Kamal Khosla is a middle class retired man who has invested all his savings into buying some land to build his house. Things get complicated when he discovers that the land he bought is taken over by the unscrupulous powerful businessman Khurana (Boman Irani).  The film is engaging, hilarious and thus very much underrated, certainly deserving more recognition.   Photograph Photograph (2019) starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra in the lead roles, is a light hearted romantic drama film written and directed by Ritesh Batra. The storyline revolves around the lives of Rafi (played by Nawazzudin Siddiqui) and Miloni Shah (played by Sanya Malhotra). Rafi is a photographer struggling to make ends meet while Miloni who is a chartered accountancy student comes from an upper middle class family. Despite the two contrasting social and cultural backgrounds, Rafi and Miloni manage to develop their bond of friendship or rather situationship.  Although the film isn’t very popular, it certainly is one of the well made films of Indian cinema.      October October (2018) directed by Shoojit Sircar, features Varun Dhawan, Banita Sandhu and Geetanjali Rao.  Although the film didn’t receive the recognition and popularity as much as it deserved, it is undeniably one of the most thought provoking and insightful films made in Indian cinema. The plot revolves around Danish Walia (played by Varun Dhawan) who is a hotel management intern. One of his colleagues is Shiuli (played by Banita Sandhu), whom he dislikes initially. However, when Shiuli meets with an accident which leaves her bed ridden, Danish gets deeply affected by the incident so much that it transforms him as a person. The film compels you to think about many deeper aspects of life.   Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa Kundan Shah’s Kabhi haan Kabhi naa (1994) is a romantic comedy drama film starring Shahrukh Khan, Suchitra Krishnmoorthy and Deepak Tejori. The film is one of the most memorable films of the 1990s but it certainly deserved more recognition and acclaim than what it received. The plot of the film is centred around the life of Sunil ( Shahrukh Khan), a carefree youngster who is least interested in academics, but is immensely passionate about music.  It is one of the very few films made in Bollywood, where the protagonist of the film plays a loser’s role.

It is generally believed that if a socially relevant message is conveyed through a movie, it can impact people more deeply than if conveyed otherwise. So here is a list of films that not just entertain you, but also enrich you. Taare Zameen Par Taare Zameen Par (2007) starring Darsheel Safary, Aamir Khan, Tisca Chopra is unquestionably one of the most emotionally stirring films made in Indian cinema. The film addresses the topic of dyslexia and child upbringing very sensitively and informatively. It is also Aamir Khan’s first film as a director and there is no doubt, he did justice to it. The film won five film fare awards and was also acclaimed for its soulful music.   3 Idiots One of the best comedy drama films that entertains you as well as enriches you is 3 Idiots (2009) featuring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi and R. Madhavan. The film tries to address the flaws in our education system and compels us to reconsider our perspective towards education and learning in general. It is indubitably one of the most successful films made in Bollywood with six film fare awards to its name.    Oh My God Umesh Shukla’s Oh my God (2012) starring Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar is one of the few satirical films in Bollywood which addresses the superstitions prevailing in our society. The film is an adaptation of the Gujrati play Kanji virudh Kanji, revolves around the life of an atheist named Kanji Mehta (played by Paresh Rawal).  It is definitely one of the films that not just entertains you, but also compels you to think and introspect your perspective by conveying a socially relevant message.   Dangal The 2016 Bollywood film Dangal is a biopic on the lives of Mahavir Singh Phogat (played by Aamir Khan) and his daughters Geeta Phogat (played by Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Babita Kumari (Sanya Malhotra). There is no doubt that Dangal is much more than just a biopic. Along with educating the audience about the sport of wrestling, it also explores a father daughter relationship that can emotionally stir you and above all it addresses the issue of gender discrimination in our society very articulately.      Swades Swades (2004) directed by Ashutosh Gowariker is one of Indian cinema’s finest of films. The film stars Shahrukh Khan and Gayatri Joshi in the lead roles and tries to shed light on various social issues that prevail in our society like caste discrimination, poverty, lack of education. The film also tries to show the arduous lives of people in rural India. With 2 film fare awards and innumerable other accolades, Swades is undoubtedly a very thought provoking film which conveys a very relevant social message.   Chak de India There is certainly no doubt that Shimit Amin’s Chak de India (2007) is one of the best sports films made in the Indian film industry, but it is a lot more than just a sports film. The film tries to explore many aspects of our society and tries to address a number of socially relevant issues like caste and gender discrimination, communal biases, lack of unity.  Chak de India is one of the most acclaimed films of Bollywood and is a recipient of 5 film fare awards and numerous other accolades.  

7 Bollywood Actors Who Never Won Filmfare Award

Dharmendra Dharmendra is unarguably one of the most renowned and senior actors of Indian cinema who has worked in over 250 films in his five decade long acting career.  But very few people might be aware that Dharmendra has never won a film fare award as an actor, in spite of the fact that he has given countless number of fine performances in countless number of super hit films like Sholay (1975), Yaadon ki Baarat (1973), Jeevan Mrityu (1970). However, he did receive a film fare life time achievement award in 1997 for his contribution to Indian cinema.   Rajendra Kumar One of the most prominent actors of Indian cinema was the late Rajendra Kumar who was known for films like Dhool ka phool (1959), Mere mehboob (1963), Sangam (1964). Despite the fact that he acted in over 80 films and was a recipient of four film fare nominations, he never received a film fare award in his four decade long career.   Shashi Kapoor With over 170 films and numerous accolades to his name, Shashi Kapoor is one of the finest actors the Indian film industry has had. He is popular for his performances in films like Jab Jab phool khile (1965), Deewar (1975), Trishul (1978). He has also played prominent roles in a number of English films. In spite of this, he has never won a film fare award for the Best actor, though he is a recipient of the film fare award for the best supporting actor and a film fare life time achievement award.   Shatrughan Sinha Shatrughan Sinha is unquestionably one of the most prominent actors of the Indian film industry. In his career spanning over four decades, Shatrughan Sinha has worked in over 150 films and has been a recipient of several accolades including four film fare nominations. He is known for his commendable performances in films like Mere Apne (1971), Kaalicharan (1976), Vishwanath (1978), Kaala Pathar (1979), Shaan (1980) and many more. Hence, it is difficult to digest that Shatrughan Sinha has never been a recipient of any film fare award till now.   Akshay Kumar Rajiv Bhatia more popularly known as Akshay Kumar is beyond any doubt one of Bollywood’s most popular actors. Akshay Kumar has acted in over a hundred films with several accolades to his name. Some of his many notable films include Mohra (1994), Baby (2015), Airlift (2016), Toilet Ek prem katha (2017), Padman (2018). Even though he has won film fare awards for the Best villain for Ajnabee (2001) and Best comedian for Garam Masala (2005), Akshay Kumar has never won a film fare award for the Best actor till date, despite being one of the most eminent actors of the film industry.   Suniel Shetty One of the most eminent actors of Bollywood, especially in the decade of the 90s is Suniel Shetty. He has worked in over a hundred films and is renowned for the versatility in his acting. He is prominently known as one of the action heroes of the 90s even though he has also played negative roles in a number of films. He is acclaimed for his performances in films belonging to the comedy genre as well. Some of his many notable films include Mohra (1994), Takkar (1995), Hera Pheri (2000), Dhadkan (2000), Shootout at lokhandwala (2007) and many more. Even though he has won a film fare award for the best villain for the film Dhadkan in 2001, he is yet to win the film fare award in the best actor category.    Ajay Devgan Ajay Devgn is undeniably one of the most commendable actors of the Indian film industry. He started his career in the early 90s with the film Phool aur Kaante (1991) and has acted in over a hundred films. Some of his prominent films include Ishq (1997), Singham (2011), Drishyam (2015), Raid (2018). Although Ajay Devgn has won four film fare awards, he has never won a film fare award in the best actor category.
