Occasionally there comes a movie that can surprise you with its unanticipated plot twists and turns. Here are some of the films that caught the audience by surprise with their endings. So before you read further, we would like to inform you there are some serious spoilers coming ahead.

Kahaani

Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani (2012) is indubitably one of the most engaging suspense thrillers made in Indian cinema. The plot revolves around the pregnant Vidya Bagchi (played by Vidya Balan) searching for her missing husband. The audience is kept glued to their seats as Vidya Bagchi seeks one clue after the other to find her husband. We anticipate that the clues would lead Vidya to her husband in the end, but we are in for a shock, when it is revealed in the end that Vidya is not pregnant and was well aware that her husband was already dead. Her whole search was a façade which she created to reach her husband’s murderer.

 Kaun

Kaun (1999) which is directed by Ram Gopal Varma, is one of Bollywood’s most intriguing psychological thriller films. The film is centred around a young girl (played by Urmila Matondkar) who is alone at home waiting for her parents to return while an unknown serial killer is on the loose. Just when she is trying to calm herself after watching the news of the serial killer, a man rings the doorbell of her house and introduces himself as Sameer Purnawale (played by Manoj Bajpai). Throughout the film the audience is kept by the edge of their seats anticipating that Sameer Purnawale might be the serial killer, only to find themselves taken by surprise in the end when they discover that it is in fact Urmila’s character who happens to be the psycho-killer.

 Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa

One of the most commendable romantic comedy films made in Bollywood is Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na (1994). Directed by Kundan Shah, the film revolves around the life of Sunil (played by Shahrukh Khan) who is madly in love with his friend Anna (played by Suchitra Krishnamoorthi). Anna however considers Sunil nothing more than her good friend and is in love with Chris (played by Deepak Tejori). Eventually as the story unfolds and progresses towards its end, Anna’s marriage gets arranged with Sunil and we all are made to believe that like most other Bollywood films this story too will end on a happy note with the protagonist Sunil uniting with his love interest Anna. However, that is not what happens and the audience is taken by surprise. Sunil eventually realises that Anna has agreed to marry him only out of compulsion and so he decides to cancel the marriage and Anna eventually marries Christopher whom she loves.  

Ajnabee

Ajnabee (2001) starring Bobby Deol, Kareena Kapoor, Akshay Kumar and Bipasha Basu is undeniably one of the most engrossing suspense thrillers of Bollywood that can keep you glued to the edge of your seats. The story revolves around the lives of Raj (Bobby Deol) and Priya (Kareena Kapoor) who move to Switzerland just after their marriage where they happen to come across an Indian couple Vikram (Akshay Kumar) and Sonia (Bipasha Basu). As the story unfolds, Raj gets framed in the murder of Sonia and is compelled to seek evidence to prove his innocence. The evidence he finds, eventually leads him to discover that the girl whose murder he is framed in, is in fact alive.    

Talaash

One of the most engrossing and intriguing suspense thrillers made in Bollywood is Reema Kagti’s Talaash (2012) starring Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherji and Kareena Kapoor. The plot revolves around the lives of Inspector Surjan Singh Shekhawat (Aamir Khan) and his wife Roshni (Rani Mukherji) trying to cope with the grief of the demise of their only son. As the story unfolds, Inspector Shekhawat is trying to unravel the case of a mysterious car accident and is helped by Rosie (Kareena Kapoor) to solve the case. With every clue he finds with the help of Rosie, the mystery deepens and the audience is kept intrigued right till the end. Eventually, we are in for a shock when it is revealed that Rosie had died in an accident long before she met Inspector Shekhawat.

Ittefaq

Ittefaq (2017) starring Akshaye Khanna, Siddharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha is an adaptation of the 1969 suspense thriller film of the same name which featured Rajesh Khanna and Nanda. The plot of the film revolves around a murder which has taken place, involving two suspects; Vikram Sethi (Siddharth Malhotra) a renowned author and Maya Sinha (Sonakshi Sinha) who happens to be the wife of the deceased victim Advocate Shekhar Sinha (Samir Sharma). As the story unfolds and as new evidence comes to light, we are made to believe that Vikram is innocent and it is actually Maya who has murdered her husband and framed Vikram for his murder. And because this belief of ours coincides with the story of the 1969 Ittefaq, our conviction becomes even stronger that Maya is the murderer. But here comes the twist, when it is revealed in the end that it was in fact Vikram who had committed the murder and framed Maya and not the other way round.
